Bo at the Vet

Hello everyone, it's VersaBC

So as many of you may know by now Bo was bit by Kona in a territory fight.  It seems that even after a month of integrating the two together Kona has trouble accepting Bo.

After seeing the two make very good progress and even grooming one another I decided it was time to let them be alone unsupervised.  Everything went fine for a week until one day when I came back home, Kona had bit Bo's paw so bad that he walked with a noticeable limp.  Bo's paw soon began to swell up and he needed medical attention.  We were relieved to find out that Bo didn't sustain a break or sprain and that it was soft tissue damage

Kona is now visiting Dave drinking all of his beer while we wait for Bo to fully heal up, he's looking good and is nearly at full strength again.  We may let Kona have some more time with Dave as she seems to be liking all the free beer:)

Here's a video of Bo's vocal debut, enjoy everyone!

P.S. there have been a lot of new changes on N2's website www.n2thetalkingcat.com and you can see the majority of them under his fan section and visit all of his new social networks

Cats and Stress

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the latest edition of my blog. This week I will providing my tips on how to help your cat if they are nervous or stressed. I know us cats have an image of being confident and independent but underneath we still have insecurities just like humans. The key to remember is that you are not alone.

The first step is to identify what is triggering your cat’s anxiety. For this edition I will be focusing on separation anxiety.

Sometimes us cats are very dependent and bonded to our staff members. However in most cases our staff members have to go to work for someone else, this enables them to provide us cats with food and a roof over our heads. However some cats do not realise this and may fret and stress out whenever a staff member is not around to cater to our every demand.

The best way to deal with this could be to consider adopting a companion cat. Hopefully you can find one better than Kona. If this is not an option you can do what is known as graded exposure to help your cat get used to be alone. This involves you going out for a short period of time to start off with and then gradually increase this as your cat starts to become comfortable. However it is imperative that upon your return be sure to make a fuss over your cat. Provide tantalising cat treats, tuna and catnip.

Kona: You could also provide beer it provides antioxidants, and I need all the beer I can get from living with you N2.
N2: She's an uncontrollable alcoholic
Kona: Be quiet if you know what’s good for you fatty.  The fans need to hear the advice from this expertito

N2: Not PREPPY!  Do you see what I have to put up with? She has no respect. Plus her advice is LAME!

Some other strategies you may like to try include

  • Leaving a shirt you’ve worn in your cat’s basket. This will help you cat feel like you are close by.
  • Providing an enriching preppy paradise for your cat: Include toys and a scratching post. Did you know there are DVDs on the market specifically to entertain cats? The DVD has awesome images and sounds (like birds chirping, squeaking mice and fish moving around in a tank). There is also Relaxation music just for cats available on the market. In fact I think you’ll find that you will enjoy the music with your cats too.

Ultimately, it’s just a matter of patience and being willing to try different strategies such as these one I’ve discussed until you find the right solution for your cat.

Until next time

Love N2 :)

Cats with Special Needs: Hearing Impairment

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the latest edition of my totally awesome blog. This week I will be providing my tips on caring for a cat who can’t hear and I don’t mean those cats like Kona who have selective hearing when our human slaves call her out for wrecking things in our home.

Kona: I wreck things to express myself artistically, I want to leave my mark on the world so that everyone knows I was here and that I’m awesome!

N2: Kona, no one cares. I’m trying to be serious and help remind all humans that cats who are deaf can lead a normal and happy life so please go away.

Kona: Fine! I need a beer and then I'm gonna wreck something.

Sorry about that everyone, she's crazy.

Back to the important things, deafness can be caused by a number of factors, it could be hereditary or it could be caused by degenerative factors.

Did you know most white cats are born deaf? There is nothing to be worried about from what I understand cats can cope and lead a comfortable life regardless. This just demonstrates that cats are totally awesome – yep!

Here are my tips for helping a hearing impaired cat live comfortably.

1)      Use vibrations such as a sharp clap of your hands or a foot stomp at close range. When your cat turns around offer him/her a tantalising cat treat.

2)      Toss your cats favourite toys into the cats line of site and then present his/her food dish

3)      Attach a bell to your cat’s collar so that you can locate him/her around your home. Their collar should be a breakaway one with an ID tag stating he/she is deaf, along with your contact details.

4)      Deaf cats have an even stronger sense of smell and maybe become distressed if they can’t see you. Spray your ankles with your normal perfume or cologne. This will help them find you and may help ease their anxiety.

5)      As a cat I can tell you in my day I enjoyed being perched up high to look down on my human slaves. Height gives deaf cats a slight advantage that will increase their comfort level. Provide a safe area where they can perch and observe.

Until next time

Love N2

Rebecca Webb and Patsy

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the latest edition of my blog. This week I will be featuring a special story about a Super fan of mine who has loved cats her entire life. Her name is Rebecca Webb and she rescued her first cat at the age of 4. This is her story:

"My parents were taking me over to see my Uncle on his farm, his cat he rescued earlier in the year from the streets who had just had a litter of kittens. I loved cats, I would always borrow books from the library to read up about them. My father was adamant we weren’t going to adopt a kitten. We were just looking, we have a dog and they don’t get along with cats. I remember the first time I saw the kittens, I was like a kid in a candy store. There was this one cat in particular that stayed with the entire time we visited the farm. We played so many games, I loved him. When it came time to pack up and go home I didn’t want to leave this kitten, I pleaded with Dad to let us take him home. I was getting really sad when he said no but I knew better than start throwing a tantrum. It was a really hot day and the back window of my father’s car was open. The kitten I had been playing with decided to jump in the back seat of the car with me. I was so happy and excited. I asked my Dad once again if he could come home. He finally caved in after he saw how happy the cat made me."

"I decided to name my new kitten Patsy, we did everything together. We went outside to play in the cubby house and we took naps together.  Sadly I did not have Patsy for very long. He was an outdoor cat and he disappeared for almost a week. I remember drawing a missing poster for him. I still have it even until this very day. Later my father found him. He had been bitten by a brown snake (deadly snake from Australia)  and passed away."

"I will always remember Patsy, our bond was one of a kind. As you can see in the picture I loved him so much.  He rarely scratched me even though I was quite overbearing with affection as you can see in the last picture which was one of the last ones we ever took together."

"When the time was right, I told my parents I was ready to welcome another cat from the RSPCA (my local rescue organisation). No one will ever replace Patsy but I loved being a cat parent and wanted to save another life.  However I learned my lesson, after all I went through with Patsy all of my cats were going to be indoor cats. The ultimate lesson I wanted to share was there is no greater love then that of a rescue cat. If you can open your home and your heart, cats give you so much yet ask for so little in return."

Rebecca, you are a very preppy cat parent. Thank you for sharing your story and for adopting cats.

Until next time

Cats with Special Needs: Vision Impairment or Blindness

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the latest edition of my blog. As you know we run a pet adoption promotional campaign at #TeamN2 headquarters so this week’s edition will be the first of many that focuses on providing tips to care for cats with special needs.

I have prepared some tips on caring for cats who are visually impaired or completely blind. Blindness and visual impairments can be caused by several different things such as glaucoma or trauma. If this happens cats will rely much more on their remaining senses especially smell to help them get around.

  • Your cat will rely heavily on different scents and their memory to help them get around your home. It is for this reason I recommend keeping the food, litter box and furniture in the same place.
If you are entertaining and have to move chairs or any other furniture around please be sure you remember to put in its original place.

  • Highlight potential hazards for your cat such as such a stair landings with a small amount of lemon oil or potpourri. We don’t like those smells and if you cat is as smart as me then they will avoid that area of your home.
  • Make sure your cat has a quick release collar with their name, address and your phone number as well as that of your vet.
  • Be Patient with your cat throughout this change
  • Be helpful to your cat by avoiding leaving things lying on the floor that your pet can bump into. If you have small humans be sure to introduce this as a house rule to them as well. The last thing you want is your cat tripping over a wash basket or anything like that it wouldn’t be very preppy at all for your cat.
  • Block access to any stairways, balconies and decks.
  • You can still enjoy quality playtime with your cat, you can buy toys that stimulate other senses. For example, there are balls with bells in them that allow your cat to bat around with their paws and chase around the home. There are paper bags and balls as well as one of my personal favourite catnip scented toys. Oh catnip! I love it so much. You have to get this for your cats because it’s totally awesome – yep!

Lois Flanigan and Einstein

Hello everybody,

Welcome to this edition of my blog.

Lois Flanigan, posted a picture of her cat Einstein and shared their story as part of my campaign to promote pet adoption from a local shelter or rescue organization.

I was so moved by her story I contacted her and asked her I could write a blog about her inspiring work and how Einstein helped give Lois a new lease of life after she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She felt like MS had made her an outcast, unneeded, unable to contribute to society especially after she had to stop working.

They say everything happens for a reason. Lois and her husband played an integral role in building a local shelter. They had fostered many animals before and after the shelter was built. This how she came to meet Einstein, he was going to be put down and in need of a good home. Lois and her husband agreed to look after him until either a space opened up at the shelter or a home could be found. Flanigan said it seemed like a “simple task at the time.”

Einstein would often cry out for attention and this would get her up out of bed to tend to his need. One day Einstein was sitting next to Lois on her bed looking up at her with his kitty cat eyes and his own supersonic purr when Lois came to the realise that she still had something to offer, it didn’t matter that she couldn’t sit at a desk solving various computer problems. She could still do something with her life. This realisation lead her to accepting a volunteer position with South Dakota Woman of Today group. She was in charge of putting together their newsletter. All of the lessons she learned from within this group lead to her establishing a support group of her which is called Strive against Multiple Sclerosis. The group aims to encourage others to look within themselves to bloom where they are planted.

“I don’t know if Einstein is aware that I saved his life but I doubt he realises that he saved mine.” Flanigan said.
I personally think Einstein is aware that Lois saved his life and like me wants to raise awareness of the benefit adopting a pet from shelter can bring to a human life.
Lois Flanigan you are very preppy indeed and I thank you for sharing your story with us.

Cats and Hairballs

Hello everyone,

Welcome to another totally awesome edition of my blog. This week I will be sharing with you my tips on how to help prevent the formation of hairballs. From a cats perspective hairballs are extremely lame and I imagine that all of our human cat parents would agree.

A hairball is a small collection of fur that is formed in the stomach of animals. Us cats are prone to getting hairballs because we like to keep our coats clean.  Honestly, you would think that because we like to be clean that we would be rewarded for our efforts but no it doesn’t work out that way.

Below are some of my suggestions to help prevent the formation of hairballs in your cat.

  • Daily Brushing: This is especially important if you have a longhaired cat. A nice brushing helps remove loose hair which would otherwise be swallowed by your cat as he/she is cleaning their coat.

N2: I love it when my human slave brushes me, it is a great way to bond with your underlings. Hopefully if you have more than one cat they will share your time unlike Kona who pushes me out of the way so that she gets a brushing instead. I’m the senior cat of the house, she should have some respect

Kona: N2, stop lying to the people. No amount of brushing time with human underling is going to make you look any better, that ship sailed a long time ago. Let’s face it, I’m younger and hotter and the fans deserve to see me looking as awesome as ever.

N2: Do you see what I have to put up with.  She is so disrespectful. Anyway, human slave has just taken her away to allow me to finish my blog in peace. Let’s continue with my tips

  • Consider introducing a special formula of dry food for hairball prevention into your cat’s diet. You will find your cat will respond better to this rather than any smelly products that you put on our paws. My dear fans it is not very preppy at all to do this to us. You have to appreciate that cats take great pride in our appearance and unsightly oils and smells from a paste on our paws just hinders this process.
  • If your cat is excessively grooming, which is a contributing factor to hairballs and you are following the last two steps all is not lost. You may like to distract your cat from grooming all the time. I suggest buying lots of new toys to play with, you could also try and play defender cat which is a very interactive game. If you still find your cat needs a little bit more encouragement try some catnip or tuna to encourage playtime.

Cats & a vacation

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to the latest edition of my blog. One thing I have never understood is why humans go away on vacation. Surely staying at home with a preppy feline like me is equally as enjoyable if not more so. Of course I can totally understand why they’d want to get away from Kona.... SHE'S CRAZY!

Kona: I’m not crazy N2.

N2: Yes you are Kona, stop trying to ruin my blog.

Sorry about that everyone, anyway in this week’s edition I will be providing you with my tips on how to preparing your cat when you are going on vacation.

  • Depending on your vacation destination you may be able to take your cat with you. After all we are part of the family too. We could bask in the warmth of the sun in 5 star resort too! However I would only suggest doing this if your cat is confident and used to go going out and about with you.
  • If you are boarding your cat, check out the options well in advanced. You may like to ask fellow cat parents and the vet for a suitable recommendation. I then suggest making an appointment to view the facilities of any cattery you are consideration to see if it preppy enough for your cat.
  • If you board your cat make sure you have our vaccinations and worming treatment completely up to date as the cattery will ask you to present this when you your cat into the facility.
  • Transport your cat in a secure cat carry cage. It is a good idea to pack our basket, favourite blanket and/or cushion to help us feel much more comfortable. I also recommend that on the last three nights before your vacation wear the same old t-shirt to bed. Put in with our beading so that we can smell your aroma while you are away. This will bring us great comfort.
  • Your cat should also have a collar with an ID containing contact details of the principal parent and carer in your absence. If your cat is travelling with you then make sure you put the contact number of where you are staying at on the tag.

A cat and a baby (the two legged kind)

Welcome to the latest edition of my blog. This week I’ll be addressing how to prepare your cat for the arrival of a baby.

Cats are not big fans of major changes to our daily routine.  This is especially true as if you have a preppy mature feline like me. Therefore it is imperative that we are well prepared for the new arrival.

Below are some tips to assist you with these preparations
  • Schedule quality time to spend with your cat after you have spent time attending to the baby. This way we will not see the new arrival as competition or feel like we are being replaced. Be sure to ask any visitors you may have to make a fuss over us as well as the baby too.

  • Allow us to smell the new baby’s belongings. This will satisfy our curiosity and allow us to see the new arrival does not present any kind of threat to us.

  •  Maintain our regular routine to the best of your ability. This includes meal times and also provision to provide us with tantalising cat treats.

Intergrating a second cat into your home

Hello everyone,

Adopting a pet is a wonderful thing you as a humans can do. There are some many animals in local shelters that need to find good homes. My master loves to save a life and provide a good home to shelter animals. He saved my life and Kona’s and we are very fortunate to have our own family.

Personally, life was pretty good before Kona came round (No it wasn't your life was incomplete without meee!) . She steals my food all the time and its not fair. (I don't steal food N2, you should share!) Oh Kona, go away I'm busy.
Okay now where we, awe yes adopting a second cat from your local shelter.  I know master meant well by adopting Kona, he wanted me to have a companion after my dear brother Night crawler passed away. Night Crawler was such a great brother.
This edition of my blog will provide my suggestions on how to integrate a second cat into your home.

  • We need a human to supervise the initial meetings

  • Never force cats of any age together, we will adjust at our own pace and time. For instance, when master first bought Kona home he allowed us to work things out on our own.  He knows that I am extremely intelligent and will decide if I wanted to be friends with Kona or not.

  • Be sure to provide your resident cat with plenty of attention and catnip! Your resident cat will need to feel their security and status within the home is not threatened by the new arrival. I might print this point out and stick it on the fridge for master to see.  N2, you should feel threatened because I'm smart, beautiful and awesome. Who wouldn't love meee?

  • Provide your resident cat with their own safe places to retreat if they feel the need.

  • Allow both cats the opportunity to interact with one another a few minutes at a time at least six times a day for a few days.  It maybe a safer option to have your new addition in their carrier. I voted for N2 to go into the carrier.  No way Kona, I am the chief resident of the house it should be you that goes in there.

  • When both cats seem comfortable you can begin to let the cats interact with each other for short periods outside of the carrier.

  • Don’t shut the cats up in the one room when they meet instead give both cats the opportunity to retreat to a different area of the home.

  • Use separate food dishes so we don’t compete with each other for food.

Indoors vs Outdoors

Hello everyone,

I have spent all off my life as an indoor cat; it’s a great way to live. However for some humans the decision to raise a cat as indoor cat or an outdoor cat can be a difficult decision. So I thought we would make a pro and con list for indoor verses outdoor cats.

  • Some humans may live in an apartment block on a busy road which can be life threatening for outdoor cats. Most cats have little to no awareness of a moving motor vehicle. Cars are the most common reason outdoor cats lost their lives; this is a sad but true fact. Indoor cats are safe from being hit by cars.

  • Indoor cats are not at risk of being injured by other animals such as dogs, foxes or other cats.
  • Outdoor cats are at risk off getting lost or worst still picked up by animal control.
  • Outdoor cats may bring a treat home for their humans such as a dead bird or mouse. I am told humans do not view such a gift favourably.
  • Outdoor cats are risk to contract parasites such as fleas or ticks. Those are not very preppy!
  • There are many myths that indoor cats are predisposed to having a weight problems because we do not get the exercise that we need.  Firstly, I do not have a weight problem I am just big boned and have a thick fur coat that is all. Stop lying N2 you're fat and you know it! No I'm not Kona .
  • Sorry about that everyone, Kona always tries to take over but I'm not going to let her. You can bring the outdoor life instead by ensuring your home is as stimulating as possible for cats. I spoke about some ideas to keep preppy felines entertained in an earlier blog so you may wish to refer back to that.
  • Indoor cats live an average 10-17 years while outdoor cats live an average 2-5 years.
  • You can teach your cat indoor cat to walk on leash, just be sure to use an ultra-lightweight, retractable leash that's attached to a harness, not a collar. I suggest letting your cat get used to the harness for short periods indoors. Always reward your cat with tantalizing cat treat at the conclusion of each training session. Once you feel your cat is comfortable, pick a safe outdoor area to explore with them on the leash. This gives them the best of both worlds, they are safe from hazards and sharing moments with you!

Stay Preppy
